The African Gray Parrot
Parrot Food Review
There are many different products on the market to choose from! It will take research on your part to find which one works best for you and your bird. I've decided to list some products that work well for us. Its important to give a varied diet to your bird, and Adaya has lots of choices. This keeps it healthy, interesting and fun! You wouldn't want to eat the same thing every day would you? Bird forage naturally in the wild. Its important to not only have food available at all times, but let them work for their food too. Adaya has several different foraging toys in her cage, and we also hide treats for her to unwrap, etc. She really enjoys this!
Pellets
We have tried several different brands of pellets, and Adaya certainly has her favorite. This could be in part because she was weaned to this type. When Adaya came home to us fully weaned she was eating Zupreem pellets, fruit blend flavor. I wanted to give her some pellet variety and she now eats a combination of Zupreem fruit blend, Zupreem Avian Maintenance Natural Diet, and Zupreem Wild and Spicy. We have tried different brands of pellets, but she showed little interest.
Seed Nut Mixture
Adaya is also offered a limited seed nut mixture that she loves! We will be posting more about this product soon! ( I have it stored in a nice container and forgot to keep the info! :( )
Red Palm Oil
Have you heard of red palm oil? Some African Grey owners claim that adding Red Palm Oil to their bird's diet aids in their bird's health and stops them from plucking their feathers.
Natural Red Palm Oil is produced from the fruit of the oil palm, Elaeis guineensis. It is a vegetable oil and therefore does not contain any cholesterol, which is only found in animal or dairy products. Natural Red Palm Oil, made from the fruit, is sometimes confused with Palm Kernel Oil, which is made from the kernel. These are quite different in composition. Palm Kernel Oil has a fatty acid profile similar to coconut oil. Palm Kernel Oil does not contain the same amounts of carotenoids, tocopherols and tocotrienols found in Natural Red Palm Oil. Natural Red Palm Oil contains about 50% naturally saturated fats and 50% unsaturated fats. The fats in Natural Red Palm Oil are not synthetically hydrogenated or altered in any way. The unsaturated fats in Natural Red Palm are predominantly oleic acid, which is the main type of fat in olive oil.
I noticed our Grey had some dryness on her beak, and her legs and feet were dry. Knowing African Gray's eat palm fruit in the wild, I thought I would give this oil a try. WOW! We noticed a big change in her beak and legs/feet. They were no longer dry, and her beak is no longer peeling like it was. Her feather colors seemed more vibrant. She is going through her first molt, and we have not experience the crankiness some bird owners speak of. Red palm oil is now a regular part of her diet, and she enjoys it too!
"Herb Salad"
While on my quest, looking for the best products I could find for Adaya, I came across something called Herb Salad. What is Herb Salad?
Herb Salad's 100% Organic ingredients are the leaves, roots, bark and flowers of the plants that animals in the wild seek as a means to obtain required nutrients, minerals, vitamins and healing capabilities. It differs from food and water additives such as vitamins and medications in the manner that it allows your birds to choose what it is they require and in what amount, when and if their diet needs supplementing. Herb Salad's 22 medicinal herbs address common issues safely and without the dangers that improper medicating and over supplementing can produce. Herb salad is not only for sick birds. It is also beneficial in maintaining the health of the fit bird, in a safe and natural way.
After much thought, I decided to try this with Adaya. She now has this available at all times, along with her pellets, fresh fruits and veggies, cooked meals, , and truly enjoys it!
